Economy and convenience of modern installation solutions.
TME now offers RPB series bistable installation relays from a renowned manufacturer – Relpol. RPB relays are primarily intended for lighting control in residential buildings and public utility facilities. High surge currents of selected models – 80A (20ms) and 120A (20ms) – make it possible to use these devices to control outdoor lighting, fluorescent lighting as well as inductive loads, such as fans. The new series includes relays with a standard on-off function, as well as models for sequential switching and versions with a built-in memory. Via TME, the manufacturer offers models with a wide range of control voltages.
Single pole relays (SPST-NO/SPDT)
Double pole relays (DPST-NO/DPDT)
The main advantage of bistable relays is their ability to control a single circuit (usually lighting) using multiple switches. Therefore, a technician can use more than only two switches (like in a typical “staircase” circuit). This translates into convenience not only in the case of households (in passageway rooms), but also in offices, warehouses, halls and other spacious interiors where a light switch can always installed somewhere nearby.
In addition, it is worth noting two features offered by selected models of the RPB series. The first one is saving the relay position in the device memory. After a power outage, the relay will return to its pre-set state. For example: a short power outage will not permanently blackout an entire building. The other interesting function can be found in double pole double throw relays – namely, the possibility of sequential closing and opening of circuits. One of the available settings allows for operation in the following cycle: both circuits open – pulse S – R1 closed, R2 open – pulse S – R1 open, R2 closed – pulse S – both circuits closed – pulse S – both circuits open etc. Of course, it is also possible to configure a simultaneous change of the state of R1 and R2 circuits at every pulse fed to the S input.
Bistable relays make it possible to reduce installation and operating costs in several ways. First of all, they can be controlled with pulse and single switches, in other words: the cheapest type available in any electrical shop. Secondly, RPB series products require very low control and supply currents. What’s more, some models do not require as high voltages as these present in the power grid – the coil can be powered by a potential difference of 24V AC/DC (supplied from an external transformer or inverter). The low control currents also mean that cables with a small cross-section area (much smaller than standard 3×1.5mm2 wiring) can be routed to the light switches. The third aspect is the reduction of time required to control powered devices, which translates into savings of electrical energy – provided that switches are installed in an ergonomic way.
