With the customisable 09 series keypads from EAO, designers and contractors can easily make an interface for most of the common applications, primarily involving control of machines, as well as special-purpose motor and rail vehicles.
The 09 series keypads are supplied by EAO, a renowned Swiss manufacturer specialising in durable components for interfaces and controllers. Just like most of other products from this supplier, they are perfectly suitable for applications in transport or automation. The possibility to replace keys and in this way customise the keypad to your specific needs and the simplicity of installation are major advantages of those solutions. Thanks to them, the 09 keypads can be effectively used as components of both individual projects and mass-produced devices.

PLASTIC KEYPADS
The 09 series keypads available from the TME catalogue are basic product versions. They have six monostable switches (circuit closed when pressed). They feature contacts with a load capacity of 0.03 A at 12 V or 24 V DC (depending on the model). Each button has its own lead wired to a 16-pin connector located at the back of the body. From the TME catalogue, you can purchase versions powered via the connector or an external power adapter (with a set of plugs for sockets in various global standards). A force of approximately 6.5 N is required to activate the button, making it difficult to press accidentally, but also ensuring optimal user comfort.
The symbols on the keys and their outlines are illuminated independently.
As the keypads presented here belong to the BASIC line, it should be noted that they have monochromatic (red) illumination of the ring around the button and white illumination of the symbol placed on its front.
The keypad is housed in an enclosure measuring approximately 115x77x26 mm. It is designed to be panel-mounted, i.e. inserted into an opening made in the panel. Thanks to the seals protecting the edge of the bezel and the keys, the enclosed buttons are IP67 rated (from the front). This not only means that they are dustproof and resistant to adverse weather conditions, but also that they can be rinsed with a high-pressure water jet (which will be important if the keypad is installed, for example, outside a vehicle cabin to operate a crane, actuators or other mechanism). The module is resistant to 2 joules of impact, which makes it IK07 rated.

Mounting tool
With the use of a proper tool, the risk of damage to seals is minimised.
To ensure that the keypad is fully sealed, the keys need to be properly mounted. EAO has developed a special tool for this purpose. It has rounded edges, so it is safe for the seal protecting the opening in which the button is placed. The special shape of the tip makes it easier to both assemble and disassemble the keypad. The insertion of the keys is shown in the video below (please note that in the video you will see a multi-coloured variant of the keypad, which is not covered by this text).
AVAILABLE BUTTONS
The “versatility” of the 09 series keypads lies in the possibility of using whichever keys you want. The manufacturer provides a wide range of keys marked with universally recognisable symbols. It is worth noting that the pictograms are made by darkening white translucent plastic, so they remain visible even when the LED backlighting is not activated, e.g. in daylight or with in-cabin illumination.
ISO 7000 | EAO manufactures buttons whose symbols are described in the ISO 7000 standard. These are standardised pictograms used in vehicles all over the world (symbols for the hand brake, windscreen wipers, direction indicators, etc.). With the use of these buttons, it is possible, for example, to make an individual panel in the cockpit of a vehicle, a separate controller for some of its functions, or to use a keypad during the prototyping stage. | |
|
In-cabin | Buttons with standardised symbols include those with internationally recognised pictograms relating to in-cabin functions and equipment (seat/interior/window heating, air supply, etc.). |
|
Power supply | Although the 09 series keypads do not have contacts to control loads directly, in most applications they will be used as interfaces to control circuits with higher current capabilities. For this reason, the manufacturer provides buttons with symbols indicating power on, entering sleep mode etc. |
|
Control | Buttons with arrows and other directional symbols can be used to make controllers (e.g. for cranes). |
|
Digits | The most versatile EAO buttons have numerical symbols (0…9), to which any function can be assigned (following a simple instruction) and described without losing the legibility of the interface. |
|
Other | In addition to the buttons described above, the manufacturer also offers a number of universally recognisable symbols, such as a button with a symbol for information, telephone, traffic lights, etc. |
