- The team of ams OSRAM, in cooperation with the Fraunhofer IZM, is among the three finalists shortlisted for the “German Future Award – Federal President’s Award for Technology and Innovation”.
- ams OSRAM’s “digital light” technology brings intelligence and precision into the world of road traffic lighting, enabling novel, safety-relevant applications such as projection.
- The innovative performance of the team of Dr. Norwin von Malm and Stefan Groetsch, as well as Dr. Hermann Oppermann from the Fraunhofer IZM, convinced the jury during the nomination process and the first assessment rounds.
ams OSRAM (SIX: AMS), a global leader in intelligent sensors and emitters, has been nominated for the “German Future Award – Federal President’s Award for Technology and Innovation” in recognition of its leading-edge digital LED technology. Along with two other projects, the invention developed by the ams OSRAM team of Dr. Norwin von Malm and Stefan Groetsch has reached the final for this prestigious distinction.
Headllights that illuminate the road ahead as precisely and brightly as possible, without blinding other road users, enhance general road safety. The team at ams OSRAM has now been nominated for the “German Future Award – Federal President’s Award for Technology and Innovation” to honor the innovations underlying its groundbreaking LED headlamp technology. Following a multi-stage assessment process, the team is one of the three finalists in the race for the coveted award. In close cooperation with Dr. Hermann Oppermann from the Fraunhofer Institute for Reliability and Micro integration IZM in Berlin, Dr. Norwin von Malm, Senior Director New Technologies at ams OSRAM, and Stefan Groetsch, who leads the corresponding team within System Solution Engineering at ams OSRAM, have developed an all-new LED technology: smaller, more efficient and more intelligent than ever before, rendering more precise light distribution.
The light innovation from ams OSRAM features more than 25,600 LEDs in a matrix consisting of 320 x 80 light points. With each individual LED being controlled by a digital signal, the headlamp works similar to a video projector. Not only does it illuminate the road ahead precisely and efficiently, but it can also project warning symbols onto the road, such as a snowflake symbol to warn of icy conditions or a special symbol if a wrong-way driver is heading in the vehicle’s direction. “
I am pleased that we are once again among the three finalists for the Federal President’s Award thanks to this formidable innovation”, emphasizes Aldo Kamper, CEO of ams OSRAM. “The German Future Award is a long-standing tradition for us at ams OSRAM: in 2007, an ams OSRAM team won this prestigious award to honor our thin-film technology and in 2016, we were among the nominees. This impressively demonstrates our company’s amazing, long-term innovative power as well as the great significance of intelligent light and sensor technologies for our digital society, today and in the years to come.”
Even beyond the road traffic area, “digital light” provides the technological basis for numerous new applications that have the potential to revolutionize the interface between people and electronics. “We are absolutely convinced that our digital light has the innovative strength necessary to also convince the jury in the last round of the German Future Award”, stresses Dr. Norwin von Malm, spokesman for the team nominated for the award.
