Google Glass Now Assisting Patients In Distant Rural Areas

Brian Ho

Recent researchers have proposed the idea of Google Glass to extend bedside assistance to patients in far off rural areas where there is a lack of doctors and proper medical facilities. It can be used as an effective tool in diagnosing, managing and taking personal care of patients through efficient use of technology.

Peter R. Chai from University of Massachusetts medical school suggested that, “Glass is positioned perfectly as an emergency medicine telemedical device. It is small, hands free and portable, so you can bring it right to the bedside and have a real-time specialist with you when you need one.”

Google Glass can enable techno-medical specialists to overcome the drawback of traditional telemedicine devices which offered limited portability and problems with size and weight. Whereas, this device has easy portability and  can stream video of an exam, take and enlarge photos and consult with remote specialists. It brings medical specialization to the bedside of the patient shrinking barriers of space and time.
